ای مُرغ گیر دامِ نَهانی نَهاده‌یی
بر رویِ دام، شَعْرِ دُخانی نَهاده‌یی

O bird-catcher, You have set a concealed snare;
Over the snare, You have laid a smoke-hued veil.

چندین هزار مُرغ بدین فَن بِکُشته‌یی   
پَرهایِ کُشته بَهرِ نشانی نهاده‌یی

With such art You’ve slain a thousand birds;
And placed the feathers of the slain as signs.

مُرغانِ پاسْبانِ تو هَیهای می‌زَنند
درهایْ هویَشان، چه مَعانی نَهاده‌یی

Your watchful birds cry out in alarm;
What meanings have You hidden in their clamor?

 

مُرغانِ تشنه را، به خَراباتِ قُربِ خویش
خُم‌ها و باده‌‌هایِ مُعانی نَهاده‌یی

For the thirsty birds, in the tavern of You proximity,
You’ve put jars and wines of meaning.

آن خُنْب را که ساقی و مَستیش بو نَبُرد
از بَهرِ شب رُوی که تو دانی نَهاده‌یی

That jar whose scent the cupbearer and the drunken do not catch;
You have kept for the night-journeyers You alone know.

 

در صَبر و توبه عِصْمَتِ اِسْپَر سِرِشته‌یی
وَنْدَر جَفا و خشمْ سِنانی نَهاده‌یی

In patience and repentance, You have kneaded the immunity of the shield,
Yet in wrath and cruelty, You’ve placed spears.

بی‌زَحمَتِ سِنان و سِپَر، بَهرِ مُخلِصان  
مُلْکی درونِ سَبْعِ مَثانی نَهاده‌یی

Without the toil of spear or shield, for the sincere ones,
You’ve prepared a kingdom within the Seven Verses.

زیرِ سَوادِ چَشم، رَوان کرده موجِ نور  
وَنْدَر جهانِ پیر، جوانی نَهاده‌یی

Beneath the darkness of the eyes You’ve sent forth waves of light,
And in the world grown old, You’ve placed youthfulness.

 

در سینه کَزْ مُخَیِّله تصویر می‌رَوَد
بی‌کِلْک و بی‌بَنان، تو بَنانی نَهاده‌یی

In the chest, where forms arise from imagination,
Without pen or fingers, You have placed a finger.

چندین حِجابِ لَحْم و عَصَب بَر فَرازِ دل
دل را نُفوذ و سیرِ عیانی نَهاده‌یی

So many veils of flesh and sinew over the heart,
Yet still You’ve given the heart penetration and the vision’s journey.

اخلاقِ مُختلف چو شراباتِ تَلْخ و نوش           
در جسم‌‌هایِ هَمچو اَوانی نَهاده‌یی

Diverse tempers—bitter and sweet as wines,
You have set within bodies fashioned like jars.

وین شَربَتِ نَهانْ مُتِرشِّح شُد از زبان

سَرجوشِ نُطْق را بَلَسانی نَهاده‌یی

This hidden elixir poured forth through speech,
For You have placed a special sap as the spring of utterance.

هر عین و هر عَرَض، چو دَهان بَسته غُنچه‌یی‌ست
کان را حِجابِ مَهْدِ غَوانی نَهاده‌یی

Every essence and accident is like closed bud,

Which You have veiled in the cradle of beauty.

روزی که بِشْکُفانی، و آن پَرده بَرکَشی  
ای جانِ جانِ جان که تو جانی نَهاده‌یی

When You make them bloom and lift the veil, [it will be revealed],

O the Soul of the soul of the soul, that You placed soul within.

دل‌‌هایِ بی‌قرار بِبینَد که در فِراق
از بَهرِ چه نیاز و کَشانی نَهاده‌یی

Then the restless hearts shall see that, in separation,
For what reason You have placed yearning and attraction.

 

خاموش تا بگوید آن جانِ گفته‌ها
این چه دراز شَعْبده خوانی نَهاده‌یی؟

Be silent—so that the soul of speech may speak:
What a long enchantment of speech You have devised!
