Mahmoud Shabistari's Poetic Sufi Masterpiece: Gulshan-i Raz (Rose Garden of Mystery)

Biography

Shaykh Sʿad al-Dīn Maḥmūd bin Amīn al-Dīn Abd al-Karīm bin Yahyā Shabistarī, known as Shaykh Maḥmūd Shabistarī (687/1288–720/1320 H/CE), was a prominent Medieval Iranian Sufi. Shabistarī’s poetic sufi masterpiece, Gulshan-i Rāz, significantly contributed to the intellectual and spiritual landscape of the medieval Islamic world. In 717/1317 H/CE, Shabistarī was presented with a series of philosophical and mystical questions by Amīr Sayyid Husseinī Hirawī, a Khurasani mystic. As a result, Shabistarī composed a poetic book in Farsi titled Gulshan-i Rāz, or The Rose Garden of Mystery, addressing these inquiries.
